How to Hold an NPM Local Cantor Intensive
For your workshop, you will need a local host coordinator and a clinician. You may also
want to have an accompanist. The following guidelines presume that a coordinator is
someone separate from those doing the actual presentation, and, in the case of the
Basic Cantor Certificate, the adjudication. The local coordinator or another person will
be responsible for marketing, registration, and providing items onsite such as name
tags, refreshments, lunch, and similar practical matters.
This is just one way to approach the process (but it is the recommended approach).
After a date, site, clinician(s), and accompanist have been chosen, the local coordinator
should take care of the following details.
Contact Fr. Paul Colloton, OSFS (NPM Director of Continuing Education) at npmpaul@npm.org
Make arrangements to use a Catholic church, school, retreat center, or other facility
that has a room large enough for people to sit, observe, and sing and that has the
instruments needed to accompany a cantor.
Check that your budget assures that there will be enough income to offset expenses.
The fee for each registrant is $20.
From this registration fee
$10 per participant goes to the clinician
$5 per participant goes to the local host parish, diocese, or other sponsoring group
$5 per participant goes to the NPM National Office
Inform Fr. Paul of the date and location of your workshop.
Please note that there is an approved curriculum for this Intensive. NPM will provide an
outline.
Participants must be NPM members – either individual or part of a parish group.
Clinicians must be NPM Designated Cantor Trainers.
See the Guidelines for NPM Local Cantor Intensive Coordinators and Guidelines
for NPM Local Cantor Intensive Clinicians for additional information and suggestions.
Promote the event by means of e-mail, texting, and contacts with your surrounding
parishes, institutions, diocesan newspaper or other communication media, and other
resources of the local diocese. If there are not enough participants registered, either the
clinician will have to cover some personal expenses and take a lower stipend, or you
will have to cancel the event.
